For the life of me, I can’t remember when or where I came up with the Electric Stonefly nymph. What I can remember however, is all the fish I have caught on it. It seems to catch fish everywhere. I always keep a few Electric Stones in my box and find myself reaching for one when I am fishing a new river or when the fishing is slow. I like to fish the Electric Stonefly as the first fly in a two fly rig on a 7.5’ 3x leader. I tie them as big as a size 6 and as small as small as a 12. Try tying a few Electric Stoneflies up and see if they don’t work for you.
Directions
-
Slide the bead onto the hook and tie in about 15 wraps of .015 lead wire
- Start your thread behind the lead wraps and tie in 2 goose biots for the tail, wrapping
back to the hook barb.
- Wrap your thread forward to just behind the lead wire and tie in the wire rib, wrapping
back to the rear of the body.
-
Tie in the thin skin so the shiny side is down, that way when you pull it back over
the abdomen the shiny side will be facing up.
- Dub your abdomen up to the rear of the lead underbody.
- Pull the thin skin over the abdomen and tie off.
- Make 5 wraps up the abdomen with the wire rib and tie off.
- Tie in 5-6 strands of holographic tinsel so the tinsel is facing back over.
- Tie in another piece of black thin skin with the shiny side down for the wingcase.
- Dub 1/3 of the thorax.
- Clip a “V” into a single hen feather and tie it down in just in front of the read
section of the thorax .
- Dub another 1/3 section of thorax and repeat step 11.
- Dub the final 1/3 section of thorax and repeat step 11.
- Pull the thin skin and tinsel over the thorax and secure just behind the bead.
- Whip finish and a couple drops of head cement.
