For the life of me, I can’t remember when or where I came up with the Electric Stonefly nymph. What I can remember however, is all the fish I have caught on it. It seems to catch fish everywhere. I always keep a few Electric Stones in my box and find myself reaching for one when I am fishing a new river or when the fishing is slow. I like to fish the Electric Stonefly as the first fly in a two fly rig on a 7.5’ 3x leader. I tie them as big as a size 6 and as small as small as a 12. Try tying a few Electric Stoneflies up and see if they don’t work for you.

Directions

  1. Slide the bead onto the hook and tie in about 15 wraps of .015 lead wire
  2. Start your thread behind the lead wraps and tie in 2 goose biots for the tail, wrapping back to the hook barb.
  3. Wrap your thread forward to just behind the lead wire and tie in the wire rib, wrapping back to the rear of the body.
  4. Tie in the thin skin so the shiny side is down, that way when you pull it back over the abdomen the shiny side will be facing up.
  5. Dub your abdomen up to the rear of the lead underbody.
  6. Pull the thin skin over the abdomen and tie off.
  7. Make 5 wraps up the abdomen with the wire rib and tie off.
  8. Tie in 5-6 strands of holographic tinsel so the tinsel is facing back over.
  9. Tie in another piece of black thin skin with the shiny side down for the wingcase.
  10. Dub 1/3 of the thorax.
  11. Clip a “V” into a single hen feather and tie it down in just in front of the read section of the thorax .
  12. Dub another 1/3 section of thorax and repeat step 11.
  13. Dub the final 1/3 section of thorax and repeat step 11.
  14. Pull the thin skin and tinsel over the thorax and secure just behind the bead.
  15. Whip finish and a couple drops of head cement.
